Dersingham cat killed by Fenn trap

The RSPCA is appealing for information after a cat died after its head became stuck in a metal Fenn trap.

The cat was found by a member of the public in Dersingham, and it was reported to the RSPCA on Saturday,September 24, A spokesman for the RSPCA said the cat was believed to have dragged itself into a shed, where it died. It would not have been able to eat or drink because of the way the trap had caught around its head.

The type of trap is not illegal, but the spokesman said it must be set properly and covered – usually in some form of tunnel and not left out in the open.

The cat found in the trap was grey, and did not have a microchip.

RSPCA inspector John Jenkins said: “It would have been impossible for this cat to free itself from the trap, which was clamped firmly around its head.

“The cat had clearly managed to drag itself into the shed, where it died a slow and painful death.

“This is such a sad incident and one which could have been prevented. I would urge anyone who may be aware of anyone setting traps illegally in the area to contact the RSPCA. We would also like to try and find the owner of this cat to let them know that their cat has died.”

The RSPCA is opposed to the manufacture, sale and use of all snares and any trap which causes suffering.

Anyone who has any information about traps being set illegally should contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
