A PET cat has had to be put to sleep after being injured by a metal trap in Blacon.
Police have issued warnings to cat owners in the area after a number of incidents on Rhuddlan Road.
A resident found the cat on her doorstep last week and reported it to officers from Chester Outer NPU.
The injured animal was taken by the RSPCA to a local vet where it was found to have severe damage to its foot.
But an x-ray revealed the cat had also suffered irrecoverable kidney damage and had to be put down.
PC Andrew Manson said: “This type of trap is extremely dangerous and it is not just animals that are at risk.
“There is a very real possibility that a child could have been injured and we need to find whoever set the trap to ensure no further animals or people or hurt.”
Local people claim this latest example of animal cruelty is another in a long line of problems in the area and that it is cats specifically which are being targeted.
PC Manson added: “This is an issue we are taking extremely seriously and I would like to appeal to anyone with any information to contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
