Animal trap amnesty ‘a success’

An amnesty on illegal traps that can kill or maim animals has been a success according to Lincolnshire Police.

A dozen steel-jawed metal Gin Traps have been handed in to officers in the south of the county.

The trap – which can also pose a threat to pets – was outlawed decades ago but as possession of such a device is not illegal, many are still in circulation.

Lincolnshire Police’s wildlife liaison officer Pc Kev Henson said he was delighted at the speed of the response.

Pc Henson, who launched the amnesty at the beginning of the month, said: “It is illegal in England to use any kind of trap designed to restrain an animal using steel jaws.

“These traps are primitive and barbaric, causing great pain to the captured animal.”

Members of the public who find these traps are urged to contact their local police station or the RSPCA.
