Orkney cats caught in gin trap

Cat escaped gin trap with minor injuries

A domestic cat returned home to her elderly Stromness owners with her leg caught in a gin trap on Thursday (23 July).

The trap was removed and the cat, named Amelia, was taken to the vet where she received painkillers, although she sustained no obvious injuries.

The area surrounding the owners home and gardens was inspected but nothing suspicious or related to the trap was found. Amelia was found caught in the trap

Senior Inspector Mike Lynch was called in to investigate the incident and said, “Traps such as this have been illegal since 1951. They are cruel and indiscriminate and will capture whatever or whoever sets it off.”

Anyone with information about the trap found in the Stromness area should contact the Police on Orkney 872241 or the SSPCA on Orkney.
