The assault happened towards the end of the hunt at Crundale, near Ashford, on 19 February at about 1425 GMT.

The anti-hunt campaigner was treated in hospital for multiple bruising and a suspected broken rib.

It was the hunt’s first meeting after the ban on fox hunting with dogs was made law.

As part of their investigation into the assault, Kent Police have issued photographs of the five suspects they wish to speak to.

Det Sgt Andy Chapman described it as an unprovoked attack on a man unable to defend himself.

“This really has no relevance as to which side of the fence you sit on – whether you’re for hunting or against it.

“This was a fight between two lots of people, and a fight very unevenly matched,” he said.

Anyone who recognises any of the men is asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.
